Mumbai: Producers announced on Tuesday that director Abhishek Subba will handle the biography of Ronnie Screwala’s famous hockey player Major Dian Chand for RSVP Movies.
Produced by RSVP in association with Blue Monkey Films, the film “Dianchand” will hit the screens in 2021.
Tian Chand is considered to be the greatest player in hockey history to have won three Olympic gold medals for India in 1928 (Amsterdam), 1932 (Los Angeles) and 1936 (Berlin).
The film marks the reunion between Screwala and Suba after the release of the 2019 film “Sonchiria”.
Written by Subramaniam Sen and Subba, the film is currently in the process of being cast and it is expected that a top star will come aboard to play the named role of the hockey wizard.
“Tian Chand is one of the greatest hockey players in the history of our national sport and we are proud to direct his autobiography. We had a lot of research material, honestly, every achievement in his life deserves an individual story.
“I’m grateful to have such an amazing creative force as Ronnie Screwala to support this film. We can not wait for it to start next year. We hope to announce the lead actor soon,” Zubay said in a statement.
Screwala, who has previously produced films such as “Rang De Basanti”, “Sweats” and “Yuri: The Surgical Strike”, said the sub was the best choice to describe the greatness of Tian Chand’s achievements.
It is an absolute pleasure to collaborate with him again after the film “Sonchiria”. Unfortunately Tian Chand is the biggest icon of Indian sports that is not much known to today’s youth.
“There could not have been a bigger backward story than Tian Chand and I can’t wait to bring this film to the audience,” he added.
Olympic medalist Ashok Kumar, the son of a hockey legend, said he was proud to bring his father’s story to the big screen.
“There is no better hockey player in the world than three-time Olympic gold medalist Tian Chand. When Rohit White (creative producer of Blue Monkey films) approached me with the desire to make a film about my father, I was immediately impressed by his seriousness and interest in the project.
“Tian Chand’s genius and his achievements will see the world and my family, and I am happy to be a part of it,” he added.
Premnath Rajagopalan, producer of Blue Monkey Films, said every citizen of the country should know about the legend of Tian Chand.
“Rohit and I are grateful to Ashok Kumar and family for putting their trust in us … This is a legacy and story that everyone should know not only in our country, but in the world as well. We look forward to taking you with Ronnie, this will be our second project,” he said. .
“Tianchand” will be released nationwide in 2022.
